Jan Lennard Struff and Ugo Humbert will face each other in the round of 16 of the 2022 ATP Sofia Open on Thursday, September 29.
In the first round of the ATP Sofia this week, Jan Lennard Struff overcame fellow underachiever Dusan Lajovic in three sets to earn a rare main-draw victory in tour-level competition this year. He had two service errors in the opening set, but he picked up his game after that. He didn’t come up against another breakpoint until he served for the victory in the decisive set, 4-6 6-3 6-2. Despite having a challenging year on the tour, the German is currently on a six-match winning streak, so he must be feeling fairly confident right now. He won three matches as a qualifier in Sofia this week and all three singles matches he played in in the Davis Cup a few weeks ago.
In addition, Ugo Humbert entered as a qualifier and won a challenging match against Dimitar Kuzmanov, a wildcard participant, in the opening round. He was behind 0-3 in the first set and 1-3 in the second, but he came back to win both sets 7-6 6-4. Given his failures on the main circuit this year, the French youth, who won at least one ATP title each of the previous two seasons, is still searching for his first quarterfinal appearance of the 2022 season. The 2022 Rennes Challenger (IH) champion dropped out of the top 100 and is now ranked 110 in the ATP rankings as a result of his bad play and performance.
Jan Lennard Struff and Ugo Humbert are scheduled to face each other in the round of 16 of the 2022 ATP Sofia Open on Thursday, September 29. The tournament is scheduled to begin on September 26 and end on October 2.
