50th in the world Sloane Stephens came back from a set down to defeat Magdalena Frech of Poland in the first round of the Parma Open. Stephens, a semi finalist last year, didn’t hold a single break point in the first set, while French converted one of two to take the lead. The American dominated the second set to tie the match, then edged past the Pole in the third set to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. In the match, Stephens converted 5 of 7 breakpoints and saved 6 of 10. The 29-year-old, who reached the French Open quarterfinals this year, improved to 5-5 on clay in 2022. This is the only other clay court tournament this year where she has won a main draw match.

Danka Kovinic entered the tournament with a 2-9 record in her previous 11 matches. But she’ll be pleased with her start in Parma, where she defeated France’s Océane Dodin in a three-set first round match. The Montenegrin, who reached the third round of both the Australian and French Opens this year, got off to a fast start, winning the first set 6-1. Dodin turned the tables and drew level in the second set, and fortunes changed. In the third set, Kovinic had an early break but was unable to close out the set at 5-3, with Dodin regaining the break, but Kovinic broke back immediately to win the two-hour and four-minute contest 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.
