In his first round, Sebastian Korda defeated Hugo Gaston and Lorenzo Musetti 6-3, 7-6 to advance to the quarterfinal in Metz. In the second set of his match against the Frenchman earlier this week, he saved two set points (on serve), and in the second set of his match against the Italian in the second round, he had to come back from a break down. The gifted American teenager hasn’t had a particularly significant result on the main tour this year. In the first half of the season, he lacked confidence and occasionally blew opportunities. He hasn’t been totally fit in the second half of the season because he sustained an injury during the grass swing that forced him to miss Wimbledon.

Lorenzo Sonego was lacking in confidence and motivation before travelling to Metz as a result of two disappointing defeats, one to Jordan Thompson at the US Open and the other to Maxime Cressy in Winston-Salem. He was fortunate to receive a favourable draw, and to his credit, he made the most of it by beating Gilles Simon, 37, and the out-of-shape Aslan Karatsev to advance to the quarterfinal. The Italian had high hopes and expectations going into the 2022 season, but he has performed badly and fallen almost 40 places in the ATP rankings during this time. In his previous four quarterfinal encounters this year, he had suffered losses in three of them, with his lone victory coming against Fernando Verdasco, 38, in Buenos Aires.
