Sloane Stephens defeated former world No. 1 Karolina Pliskova, 6-0, 6-4, and new world No. 41 Varvara Gracheva, 6-2, 6-1, in two rounds of play. Since the start of the clay season, she has transformed into a different player, winning 11 of her last 13 matches and going on a seven-match winning streak in France. After a slow start to the season, the 2018 Roland-Garros finalist resurrected herself with a 125K title in Saint-Malo and a semifinal in Rabat last week. She’ll be relieved to know that eight of her 15 major second-week appearances have come in Paris alone, thanks to her 8-1 record in third-round matches.

Yulia Putintseva was left frustrated in the second set after being broken four times in a row. After defeating 19th seed Zheng Qinwen 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 in two and a half hours, the Kazakh advanced to the third round in Paris for the first time in five years. It was also her first top-20 finish in a major since the US Open in 2020. The former top 30 player had a poor run leading up to this week, losing in the first or second round of nine tournaments in a row (from Melbourne to Rome). She is 3-5 in the third round of majors, with previous success coming in the 2016 and 2018 Roland-Garros quarterfinals.
