Jannik Sinner and Holger Rune are scheduled to face each other in the semifinals of the 2022 ATP Sofia Open on Saturday, October 1.
Jannik Sinner appeared in the Sofia Open final twice and won both times. On Saturday, he will compete in the third final against the tricky Holger Rune. They’ve never played before, but Sinner is clearly the better player and more accomplished at this point. The Italian adores Sofia and returns every year, where he won his first trophy. It’s a special place for him, and he has a lot of confidence playing here, as evidenced by his track record at the event. Rune will be a difficult opponent, but the Danish player offers nothing new to Sinner. Despite winning both matches in the Davis Cup leading up to this, he is peaking at the right time.
Holger Rune won a couple of solid matches this week to advance to the semifinals and face Jannik Sinner. These are the opportunities Rune seeks, and he enjoys competing against the best players because this is how he sees himself. Rune has had a very long season, with 34 wins and 25 losses, and he hasn’t been in great shape recently. He’s had a good week thanks to some excellent serving and aggressive play. Sinner, it’s going to be difficult again because the Italian plays pretty much the same way. He is far more consistent and a better problem solver as a result of playing more important matches, so it’s a proper test for Rune.Â
