On Sunday, the 2022 ATP Croatia Open final will feature top seed Carlos Alcaraz of Spain taking on second seed Jannik Sinner of Italy.
After easily defeating his first two opponents, Carlos Alcaraz faced a challenge from Italy’s Giulio Zeppieri in the semifinal on Saturday. However, the Spaniard prevailed in three sets to advance to his sixth ATP final in 2022. The defending champion won the first set, but rolled his ankle in the second, which was ultimately decided by an Italian break that fell to him. After taking a medical break after twisting his ankle, the Spaniard overcame the discomfort and led 3-0 in the third after a double break. Zeppieri, however, wouldn’t give up and won the following three to tie the game. From that point on, though, the Italian started to cramp, and Alcaraz eventually won the contest 7-5, 4-6, 6-3. Prior to last week, Alcaraz had won each of his five finals, earning four victories this year. In 2022, the 19-year-old, who is 42-6, won the championships in Rio de Janeiro, Miami, Barcelona, and Madrid. On Sunday, can he claim a fifth championship in 2022?
Jannik Sinner reached his first final of 2022 after seven months, but he had already won four titles from five finals the previous year. After losing in six quarterfinal matches this season, the 20-year-old finally advanced to the final four after overcoming Roberto Carballés Baena in Umag on Friday. On Saturday, he defeated fellow Italian Franco Agamenone in straight sets to get to the title match. The World No. 10 dominated right away, building a 5-0 lead before winning the opening set 6-1. He maintained his control in the second, gaining a 5-2 advantage with a double break before being broken by Agamenone for the first time in the match. In the following game, Sinner promptly came back to win 6-1, 6-3. Sinner will be taking part in her maiden clay court final at this time. He was a finalist in Miami the previous year and has won all five of his titles on the hard surface. He does play some decent clay, though.
Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz will take on each other on Sunday July 31 in the final round of the 2022 Croatia open. The competition is scheduled to commence on July 25 and conclude on July 31 this year.
