Shapovalov had an incredible run to the Wimbledon semifinals last year, but the 13th seed is in bad shape going into this year's competition.
The opening round of the 2022 Wimbledon will feature Canadian No. 13 seed Denis Shapovalov taking on Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech on Tuesday, June 28. Shapovalov had an incredible run to the Wimbledon semifinals last year, but the 13th seed is in bad shape going into this year’s competition. Despite his recent struggles, Shapovalov has an overall record of 11-15 on grass courts and had a fantastic 8-3 run last season. Unlike Shapovalov, Arthur Rinderknech has triumphed on grass once this season, defeating Ugo Humbert in Stuttgart’s first round. However, Benjamin Bonzi defeated him in the second round.
Their previous matches ended in a tie, 1-1. Last year, Shapovalov triumphed in the quarterfinals in Stockholm, and this year, Rinderknech exacted revenge at the last eight stage in Doha. The Frenchman won in straight sets while the Canadian took three sets to win. It’s going to be a close race in this one. Shapovalov should pass the Frenchman to reclaim his form.
Shapovalov vs Rinderknech are scheduled to face each other on Tuesday, June 28 in the first round of the 2022 Championships. The timing of the match has not been decided yet. The Championships are scheduled to begin on June 27 and go on until July 10. There are a number of exciting matches on the second day as the likes of Nadal, Tsitsipas, Auger-Aliassime, Cilic and Schwartzman will be in action.
