Denis Shapovalov and Steve Johnson will take on each other in the round of 32 of the 2022 ATP Japan Open on Wednesday, October 5.
In Seoul, Denis Shapovalov made it to the ATP final for the first time in almost a year. Up to his match against Yoshihito Nishioka in the championship match, he had not dropped a set. Although it was a good week, he missed his opportunities in the title match, losing 4-6 6-7, against an underdog. Former Canadian No. 1 has recently shown signs of consistency, and it’s critical for him to maintain this level of play and complete the season as well as possible. In each of his last three competitions, he has won at least two games, and two of his most recent three defeats came at the hands of Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev.
Last week in Seoul, Steve Johnson gave a few lacklustre performances. Despite having a break advantage in both sets, he required a tiebreaker to defeat the inexperienced Ji Sung Nam in the first round then fell to Radu Albot in two tiebreakers in the second round. One of the very rare non-American tournaments where the American has appeared in the quarterfinals more than once is the ATP Tokyo. He has been to the tournament’s quarterfinals twice and achieved some notable victories over Dominic Thiem and Aleksandr Dolgopolov.
Denis Shapovalov and Steve Johnson are scheduled to face each other in the round of 32 of the 2022 ATP Japan Open on Wednesday, October 5. The tournament is scheduled to begin on October 3 and end on October 9.
