After a 364-day absence, Serena Williams returned to the WTA Tour at Wimbledon this year. She is a contender for the WTA Comeback Player of the Year award. The 41-year-old competed in Toronto’s All England Club, where she dropped three of her opening four games. The Arthur Ashe Stadium was filled for each match as Serena Williams competed in the 2022 US Open, which she stated would be her last tennis tournament. Before defeating Anett Kontaveit in a gruelling three-set match, she defeated Danka Kovinic. Williams initially seemed like she might challenge for the title, but in the end, Ajla Tomljanovic defeated her in three sets after three hours and seven minutes. She has been gone for about a year and is 41 years old, but she has displayed an exceptional spirit of perseverance.

After dropping a few hints that she might come back after retiring, it will be interesting to see if she is not nominated for the WTA Comeback Player of the Year award in 2023. In 2004 and 2018, Williams won the award for Comeback Player of the Year. She won seven Player of the Year awards throughout her career, in addition to the 1998 Newcomer of the Year and the 1999 Most Improved Player awards. This year, she was nominated alongside Tatjana Maria, Donna Vekic, and Daria Saville.

Love for Tennis

Although Serena Williams insisted that she was leaving tennis, she never used the word “retiring.” The American has already hinted at the possibility of playing once more. Williams gave her followers some reason for hope by calling Tom Brady’s U-Turn retirement a phenomenal trend. The 41-year-old said she wasn’t retiring when she appeared at a subsequent event in San Francisco. Through the two incidents, Williams gave her supporters reason to believe that the 23-time Grand Slam champion is genuinely considering a comeback. Williams was asked about her feelings about tennis in her interview with Cosmopolitan. Williams acknowledged that she missed the sport but avoided answering the question directly.

Yeah, I’ll always have a relationship with tennis, right? So I’m gonna keep that open-ended, to be honest. It is. It’s a big part of who I am. I love doing it. I love the competition. And you always love what you don’t have. So I’m already missing it,” Serena Williams said.
