The queen of American tennis is back and she has her sights on Wimbledon once again. Serena Williams is perhaps the greatest female player to have ever played the sport with a whopping 23 Grand Slam titles to her name. However, things will not be easy this time around. It has been a year since Serena last played singles competitive tennis. Her last singles game was at the 2021 Wimbledon where she gave a walkover to Aliaksandra Sasnovich. The 40-year-old has only just gotten back to the game, reaching the semi-final of the Eastbourne International this month in the doubles category alongside Ons Jabeur. However, she has not had any competitive singles action since June 2021.
Serena will face 24-year-old Harmony Tan in her opening round match at Wimbledon this season. Tan has had more competitive singles action as she had taken part at S-Hertogenbosch and the WTA 125K Gaiba International. She was ousted in the round of 32 at Hertogenbosch Tamara Zidansek but she reached the semi-final at Gaiba where she was defeated by top seed Alison Van Uytcanck.
Serena and Tan are scheduled to face each other on Tuesday, June 28 in the first round of the 2022 Championships. The timing of the match has not been decided yet. The Championships is scheduled to begin on June 27 and go on until July 10. There are a number of exciting matches on the second day of the first round as the likes of Swiatek, Badosa, Williams, Gauff, Krejcikova and others will be in action.
