Daria Saville and Rebecca Marino will face each other in the quarterfinal round of the 2022 Citi Open on Friday, August 5.
Given that Daria Saville was playing Jessica Pegula, the tournament’s top seed, in the second round of the Washington Open, she was a 3/1 underdog. However, it did not really matter because the Australian easily defeated her opponent in straight sets. Saville won the match 7-5, 6-4, saving nine of the 10 breakpoints she was presented with. The Australian’s win-loss record for the season is better than some of the best in the world thanks to this very tenacity, which enabled her to eke out her 12th victory in hard court competitions to go along with just seven losses.
Rebecca Marino, who needed to qualify for the event with back-to-back three-set victories, has now won both of her first two rounds in similar fashion, making it four consecutive three-setters. Andrea Petkovic, whom she defeated 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 to advance to the quarterfinals, was on the receiving end of her sharp play this time. Marino will compete in the final eight stages of a WTA event for the first time this season. Marino had defeated Venus Williams earlier in the first round after coming back from a set down. She now has a player who has done well recently, which could make things difficult for the Canadian qualifier.
