Daria Saville and Kaia Kanepi will face each other in the semifinal round of the 2022 Citi Open on Saturday.
Kaia Kanepi fell down 0-3 in the second set of her quarterfinal match against Anna Kalinskaya after dropping the first set in 63 minutes. In the second half, she broke the Russian five times and recovered to win 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 in two hours and 33 minutes under the sweltering sun. She had already rallied against Zhu Lin in two and a half hours during her Washington, D.C., debut week. At the age of 37, the Estonian, who was already enjoying a successful season with a quarterfinal finish at the Australian Open, gets rewarded with her first career semifinal on US soil. Over the course of her lengthy career, she has advanced to nine WTA finals, but only one in the past nine. Following her victory in 2013 in Brussels, the veteran competed in just one semifinal of the 2021 Gippsland Trophy in Melbourne, where she defeated Ekaterina Alexandrova for the final and lost to Elise Mertens for the title.
When the rain forced a three-hour break in Daria Saville‘s quarterfinal match against qualifier Rebecca Marino, she was up a set and 3-0. In the second set, she was broken again to even the score, but to win 6-1, 7-5, she had to hold off four breakpoints in her final serve game. Her disappointing grass swing, which included two losses to players outside the top 200, preceded her debut in Washington, D.C. The former world no. 20 turned things around with a three-hour victory over qualifier Mirjam Bjorklund and a 7-5, 6-4 victory over reigning champion Jessica Pegula, who was ranked no. 7 in the world. The Australian is going to compete in her first semifinal match since 2018 Acapulco. She was only able to play in four events in 2020 and 2021. She wants to improve on her 4-4 record in final-four games and reach her first final since the 2017 triple (Strasbourg, New Haven, Hong Kong).
