Maria Sakkari and Danka Kovinic will take on each other in the semifinals of the 2022 WTA Emilia-Romagna Open on Friday, September 30.
Maria Sakkari’s performances in this tournament can be viewed in two ways. On the one hand, she has made slow starts, struggled in the first set, and lost it all three times, including to quarterfinal opponent Maryna Zanevska. The other side of the story is that for a player who had been in a rut recently and who doesn’t particularly enjoy playing on clay, Sakkari has done well to not only fight back and win, but also to advance to the semifinals. The big question is whether Sakkari can maintain her level of determination as she competes in her fourth match in five days.
For the second match in a row, Danka Kovinic was a second-favorite according to the bookmakers, and for the second time in a row, she overcame those odds – and her opponent – to reach the final four. In her quarterfinal victory, Kovinic dispatched Jasmine Paolini 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and 36 minutes. In doing so, Kovinic reached her first WTA tour semifinal of the season, and her second if one counts her appearance at the WTA 125 competition in Marbella. Can she now use her clay form – she is 16-8 at all levels this year – to dethrone the Greek number one?
