Aryna Sabalenka needed three sets to defeat Sloane Stephens and advance to the quarterfinals in a match that lasted two hours and two minutes. After receiving a first-round bye, Sabalenka was sent packing in the first set, with Stephens claiming four breaks of serve and a 6-1 victory. The Belarussian player, on the other hand, fought back to win the remaining two games and the match 1-6, 6-3, 6-2. Sabalenka, who was playing her first match since reaching the US Open semifinals and losing a close match to Iga Swiatek, earned five breaks of serve over the last two sets while holding her own in all but one game. She is now up against an opponent who has previously defeated her.
Donna Vekic, a former top-20 player, had dropped to 112th in the world earlier this season but has steadily risen in both the rankings and her performances. And, for the second time in a row, the Croat has won consecutive rounds to advance to the quarterfinals. The opponents against whom she has won make this performance even more impressive than her previous one in Tallinn. Vekic, who advanced through the qualifiers to enter the main draw here, sent Maria Sakkari packing in the first round, 7-6 (3), 6-1, but then made it two upsets in a row with an equally easy win over Karolina Pliskova. In an hour and 15 minutes, she defeated Pliskova 6-3, 6-2.
