Elena Rybakina has had a fantastic start to the season. The world no. 23 seemed to have found her range, though, at the grass court Major. She has won two matches in a row without dropping a set, defeating dangerous Coco Vandeweghe and Bad Homburg runner-up Bianca Andreescu in the process. In the tenth game of the first set against Andreescu, Rybakina obtained the only break. In the second set, she again twice came close to losing a break, but the world no. 56 broke back both times to force a tiebreak. In one hour and 39 minutes, Rybakina defeated Andreescu 6-4, 7-6(7-5) after edging her in the tiebreak.
The 19 year old Chinese tennis player Qinwen Zheng is making her Wimbledon debut this season. She has thus far made a commendable start at the grass court Major, defeating Greet Minnen and former US open champion Sloane Stephens in straight sets to go to the third round. Greet Minnen surprised everyone by defeating ninth-seeded Garbine Muguruza in the opening round, but she was unable to continue the winning streak when she was defeated by Zheng in straight sets in the following round. In a convincing 6-4, 6-1 victory over the Belgian, Zheng registered 24 winners, 8 aces, and just 12 unforced errors. Rybakina and Zheng have never squared off on the tour before, this will be their first faced off match against each other.
Rybakina and Zheng are scheduled to face each other on Saturday, July 2 in the third round of the 2022 Championships. The timing of the match has not been decided yet. The Championships is scheduled to begin on June 27 and go on until July 10. There were a number of exciting matches on July 2 as the likes of Swiatek, Badosa, Krejcikova and others will be in action.
