Casper Ruud and Jaume Munar Clar will take on each other in the round of 32 of the 2022 ATP Japan Open on Tuesday, October 4.
In Seoul last week, Casper Ruud began his Asian swing by overcoming Nicolas Jarry in a three-set match in the second round (R1 bye), but he was unable to move on because Yoshihito Nishioka, the eventual champion, defeated him in three sets in the quarterfinal. The Norwegian dropped one spot and moved to #3 in the most recent rankings as a result of their early exit in Seoul a few days ago. At the US Open a few weeks ago, he was just one victory away from overtaking the current No. 1 slot in the world, but he had to make do with the #2 ranking after falling to Carlos Alcaraz in the title game in New York in four sets.
Last week in Seoul, Jaume Munar Clar advanced to the second round without picking up a victory because his first-round opponent, Yosuke Watanuki, was forced to quit. In completed matches, he has a four-match losing streak. On outdoor hard courts in 2022, the Spaniard has won 13 of a possible 21 matches, arguably his finest season on the surface. He achieved several noteworthy surface-level accomplishments this year, including making it to the quarterfinals in Melbourne and the third round in Indian Wells (as a qualifier).
