Ruud and Brooksby will take on each other in the second round of the 2023 Australian Open on January 19.
In the opening round of the Australian Open, Casper Ruud defeated the talented Tomas Machac in a hard-fought four-set victory to get back on the winning track. After a straightforward victory over Thiago Monteiro to start the year, he went on to lose his next two matches to Matteo Berrettini at the United Cup and Laslo Djere in his Auckland debut. The Norwegian faced very different expectations during his current campaign than they did during his previous Australian Open campaign in 2021. When he competed here two years ago, he was ranked #28 in the world and had had very little success on hard surfaces. This is not the case today, though, as he has proven himself on the surface over the last 20 months or so and has advanced as high as second.
In the first round earlier this week, Jenson Brooksby overcame a sluggish start and defeated a challenging opponent in Christopher O’Connell, 3-6 6-2 6-3 6-2. In Auckland, where he later advanced to the semifinals, the season’s opening match required a comeback effort from him. The American teenager has gone 3-0 at this level since losing to Nikoloz Basilashvili in the second round of the US Open in 2019, winning matches against Taylor Fritz at the US Open in 2021, Benjamin Bonzi at Wimbledon in 2022, and Borna Coric at the US Open in 2022.

1-0 in favour of Casper Ruud (6-3 6-4 at Rome Masters 2022). Casper Ruud is the deserving favourite due to recent slam victories, but Jenson Brooksby can compete with the Norwegian in these circumstances if he performs at the level he did in 2021 or the early part of 2022.
