Holger Rune and Fabio Fognini are scheduled to face one another in the round of 64 of the 2022 Canadian Open on Tuesday, August 9.
Rune appeared to be sitting pretty in the quarterfinals of the French Open earlier this year, having had an excellent run on clay otherwise. However, things appear to have fallen apart quickly for Rune, who has lost eight of his next nine matches, including six first-round defeats in tournaments. That’s as shocking as it gets for a top-30 player like Rune. The fact that he won his opener in Washington last week was due to the fact that not many players are losing to Benoit Paire at the moment, but as soon as he met another opponent, Rune faded. JJ Wolf beat him in three sets in the second round in Washington.
Before having to battle his way through the qualifiers in this tournament, Fabio Fognini had only won three matches in the main draw of hard court competitions. In his first qualifier, Canadian Kelsey Stevenson, ranked 823 in the world, presented little difficulty for former world number nine and Masters 1000 champion Francesco Fognini. However, Fognini was unable to respond in the second set after Daniel Altmaier forced a third set. Overall, Fognini appeared to have improved since his appalling performance during the pandemic, particularly on clay, where he reached the semifinals in Rio de Janeiro and Belgrade.
Holger Rune and Fabio Fognini are scheduled to face one another in the round of 64 of the 2022 Canadian Open on Tuesday, August 9. The tournament is scheduled to run from August 8 till August 15.
The 2022 edition of the Canadian Open is set to begin from August 8 and go on until August 15. The men’s final is scheduled to be on August 15 and the women’s one is set to be held on August 14. There will be six rounds of play in the main draw excluding the qualifiers.
