Holger Rune didn’t have a tour-level main-draw victory on a surface other than clay when he made his ATP Metz debut in 2021, but he still managed to win four straight matches as a qualifier, including a 6-0 6-0 victory over Bernabe Zapata Miralles in the opening round, to advance to the quarterfinals. In North America last month, the gifted young Dane player broke his depressing losing skid and picked up a few victories, but he hasn’t won back-to-back matches since reaching the quarterfinals of the French Open in May.

In his first match, Benjamin Bonzi defeated Ugo Humbert of the Rennes Challenger in three sets to go to the second round in Metz. He must be relieved to have come out on top in a three-set match after losing three in a row in the Davis Cup last week. The Frenchman, 26, increased his year-to-date w-l record on indoor hard courts to 9/2 with this victory. In February, he won the Cherbourg Challenger championship, and in Marseille, he made his first quarterfinal (and semifinal) appearance on the main tour.
