Andrey Rublev and Zhizhen Zhang will take on each other in the round of 16 of the 2022 ATP Astana Open on Wednesday, October 5.
With a straightforward straight-set victory against Laslo Djere in the opening round of the ATP Astana, Andrey Rublev increased his year-to-date win/loss record on indoor hard courts to 8/1. The Russian appeared at ease the entire match and faced no breakpoints in the other nine service games, 6-4 6-3, with the exception of preserving three consecutive breakpoints at 3-3 in the opening set. The second-ranked Russian has had a lot of success on indoor hard courts throughout his career, and this year he extended his stellar performance on the surface by making it to the semifinals in Rotterdam and won the championship the following week in Marseille.
In the second round, Zhizhen Zhang will take on yet another Russian after coming back against Aslan Karatsev in the first round. He lost heartbreakingly in his most recent main-draw match at the US Open after wasting a lot of opportunities, but this week in Astana, he has made the best recovery conceivable. This season, the 25-year-old has excelled on the Challenger circuits and has risen nearly 200 spots in the ATP rankings. At the Cordenons Challenger in August, he won his first championship since 2019 and participated in three additional championship games.
Andrey Rublev and Zhizhen Zhang are scheduled to face each other in the round of 16 of the 2022 ATP Astana Open on Wednesday, October 5. The tournament is scheduled to begin on October 3 and end on October 9.
