Andrey Rublev and Dominic Thiem are scheduled to face each other in the semi final round of the 2022 ATP Gijon Open on Saturday, October 15.
Andrey Rublev had a much easier quarterfinal after a draining three-setter against Ilya Ivashka in the second round on Thursday, needing only an hour and 27 minutes to dispatch fifth seed Tommy Paul. The World No. 9 broke early to take a 3-0 lead. Paul came back to win the next three games and return the set to serve. He also saved a set point on his serve at 4-5 (30-40), but the Russian broke again to take a one-set-to-love lead. The American didn’t have a single break point in the second set, while Rublev converted one of his two to win 7-5, 6-3. The 24-year-old is now one win away from a fourth final appearance this season.
Dominic Thiem advanced to his second season semifinal with a straight-sets victory over Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo on Friday. The former No. 3 appears to be improving with each match. On Friday, he broke early in both sets, but the Argentine immediately broke back. Thiem, on the other hand, won the first set by getting a second break late in the set and the second by winning the last four games in a row. Thiem is currently ranked 165th in the world and will break into the top 100 if he wins his 18th career title this weekend. If he wins on Saturday, he will reach his first final since finishing runner-up at the ATP finals in 2020.
