On Saturday, the top-seeded Russian Andrey Rublev will take on the unseeded Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka in the semifinal of the 2022 ATP Citi Open.
The tournament’s top seed, Andrey Rublev kept up his momentum by defeating American J.J. Wolf in straight sets on Friday to advance to the semifinals of the Washington Open. The World No. 8 will appear in a semifinal for the eighth time in this season. Rublev defeated Wolf in a quarterfinal encounter, 6-2, 6-3, saving all four break points he faced in the process. The Russian player broke Wolf twice in the first set and twice in the second set. After their match was postponed on Thursday owing to weather, Rublev defeated American Maxime Cressy in the Round of 16 earlier that day. On Saturday, Rublev, a 11-time tour-level champion, will try to make it to his 17th ATP final. His record in hard court finals is 8-2. The 24-year-old has already competed in three finals this year and has a perfect winning percentage, taking home the trophy in Marseille, Dubai, and Belgrade.
Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan defeated a seeded player for the third time in the competition to reach the Washington final four. The 26-year-old lefty put on a brave performance in the quarterfinal on Friday, defeating Daniel Evans 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 7-5, in three hours and 36 minutes. The World No. 96 defeated the World No. 40 and advanced to the season’s first semifinal by saving 9 of 14 break points and converting 5 of 11. Nishioka’s greatest performance this year came in the quarterfinals in Acapulco. Can the Shenzhen Open champion of 2018 make it to his third career final? At 2020, he had also advanced to the final in Delray Beach, but instead came in second place.
