Andrey Rublev and Sebastian Korda are scheduled to face each other in the final round of the 2022 ATP Gijon Open on Sunday, October 16.
With a 6-4 6-4 victory over Dominic Thiem in the semifinal at the ATP Gijon, Andrey Rublev assured himself a spot in Sunday’s championship match. Dominic Thiem is currently ranked #165 in the world. In eight encounters, including unofficial matches, he had defeated the Austrian five times, winning each time. Prior to this week, he had twice faced and defeated opponents outside the top-100 in ATP tournament semifinals, and on both occasions, he won the match and the title. He defeated Paolo Lorenzi in Umag 2017 (earning his first ATP title), and Lorenzo Sonego in Vienna (IH) 2020.
In the semifinal match against Arthur Rinderknech, Sebastian Korda won the second set, 7-6 6-3, after saving a few set points on service in the first set. In the second round and quarterfinals earlier this week, he faced Andy Murray and Roberto Bautista Agut in challenging three-setter matches. It was crucial for him to avoid another three-setter in the semifinal. The American teenager took just one match of the 2021 season to reach the final in Delray Beach, and he won his first ATP championship in Parma a few months later. However, it took him ten months to make his debut in a championship match this year.
