Tuesday's second round of the 2022 ATP Citi Open pits world number 8 Andrey Rublev against world number 81 Jack Draper of Great Britain.
After Wimbledon prohibited Russian and Belarusian athletes from participating in the tournament, Andrey Rublev participated in just one grass-court event and lost in the opening round in Halle. Since then, Rublev has competed on clay in Bastad and Hamburg, but he didn’t perform as well as one may have anticipated for the world’s eighth-ranked athlete. The Russian defeated Francisco Cerundolo in the second round of the latter tournament after winning a few rounds at the former before falling to Sebastian Baez. Rublev will now want to build on his two victories on hard courts from earlier this year as he returns to the hard court tennis scene with a strong performance.
Draper has done well to advance to the second round here in Washington after falling in the Atlanta Open qualifying. Stefan Kozlov, an American wildcard, was defeated by Draper, who has moved up to 81st in the world, earning him just his 10th senior level victory overall. In a challenging opening set, Jack Draper faced five break points and only converted one, which occurred early in the set and gave his opponent a 3-0 advantage. But in the ninth game, just as Kozlov was ready to serve out the set, Draper broke him twice to turn the situation around, and then broke him twice to win the match. In the second set, Draper didn’t encounter a single break-point. In one hour and 53 minutes, Draper secured his spot against Rublev by winning 7-5, 6-2.
Andrey Rublev and Jack Draper will face each other in the first round of the 2022 Citi open on Tuesday, August 2. The ATP 500 competition is scheduled to start from August 1 and end on August 7 this year.
The 2022 Citi Open will see six rounds of action excluding the qualifiers. These include the round of 64, round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final. The tournament is scheduled to commence on August 1 and conclude on August 8 this year.
