The second seed Andrey Rublev will face Ricardas Berankis in the first round of the 2022 Hamburg open on Wednesday.
Andrey Rublev struggled against Federico Coria and Laslo Djere at his first competitive competition in over a month last week in Bastad, where he ultimately lost in straight sets to eventual runner-up Sebastian Baez. He was turned down for admittance into Wimbledon after failing to successfully defend his runner-up finish in ATP Halle (R1) last month. The second-ranked Russian has recently emerged as one of the most successful competitors in ATP 500 series tournaments. He has competed in at least two ATP Hamburg events, winning one against Stefanos Tsitsipas in 2020 and losing the other to Nikoloz Basilashvili in 2019. In his career, the former world number five has triumphed in three ATP 500 competitions. One of those victories was this year in Dubai, where he avoided most of the top players and defeated Jiri Vesely in the match that decided the championship.
Alexander Bublik, the ATP Newport runner-up from last week, withdrew as predicted, giving Ricardas Berankis a second shot in Hamburg this week. Luca Nardi defeated him in straight sets in the last qualifying round after he battled against Mats Rosenkranz. In ATP tournaments this year, he won two of his three main-draw matches in Dubai’s 500. He qualified for the tournament, beat Jan Lennard Struff and Alexei Popyrin in the main draw, and then faced up against Denis Shapovalov in the quarterfinals.
Andrey Rublev and Ricardas Berankis will take on each other on Wednesday, July 20 in the first round of the 2022Â ATPÂ Hamburg European open. The competition is scheduled to commence on July 18 and conclude on July 24 this year.
