The Madrid Masters have announced their entry list and all eyes are on one legendary player – Roger Federer. The Swiss maestro will play his first game on clay in almost two years. The next month’s Madrid Open will also see Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal in the 56-man field. The tournament will run from May 2nd-9th in the Spanish capital, Madrid. Notably, the event also runs alongside the women’s competition, which starts on April 29th.

Roger has enjoyed huge success in various courts, but always found clay a bit tricky to conquer. The only Roland Garros title which he won was in 2009. What’s more surprising is that he has appeared at just one of the past five French Opens. It was in 2019 when he lost to Nadal in the semifinals.

It is not clear how match fit Federer is after undergoing two right knee surgeries last year. He returned to action at the Qatar Open in Doha last month. His comeback lasted only two rounds before he went crashing out of the tournament.

Since the 2015 Istanbul Open title, Federer has not won a tour clay title. His last Madrid Open title was in 2012.

Some of the other prominent players in the entry list are Daniil Medvedev, reigning US Open champion Dominic Thiem, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev, Andrey Rublev, Diego Schwartzman and Matteo Berrettini.

The current defending champion in Madrid Open is Novak Djokovic in men’s section and Kiki Bertens in the women’s department.
