The tennis fraternity has been somewhat outspoken over the past few weeks, expressing its views on the Tokyo Olympics. Though their personal concerns might slightly differ, all resonate the same idea of being unsure about their respective participation in the Games. The latest tennis star to speak out is one of the game’s greatest ever, Roger Federer. The Swiss said he was caught in two minds about the Games. He said that it will be an honour to win a medal for his country. He also added health concerns are something to think long and hard about. Federer also asked the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to end the uncertainty around the competition, citing that athletes needed a decision.

“Honestly I don’t know what to think. I’m a bit between the two,” Federer said. “I would love to play in the Olympics, win a medal for Switzerland. It would make me especially proud. But if it doesn’t happen because of the situation, I would be the first to understand. I think what the athletes need is a decision: is it going to happen or is it not going to happen?”

Federer is considered to be one of the greatest tennis players of all time. The Swiss has won 20 grand slam titles but has been out of action recently. He bagged a doubles gold medal at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and a singles silver medal at the 2012 Olympics in London.

“At the moment, we have the impression that it will happen. We know it’s a fluid situation. And you can also decide as an athlete if you want to go. If you feel there’s a lot of resistance, maybe it’s better not to go. I don’t know,” the Swiss concluded.

Several other tennis players have spoken up against hosting the Olympics this year. Some have called for outright cancellation or postponement of the tournament while others have expressed uncertainty over their participation. The list includes the names of Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams, Naomi Osaka and Kei Nishikori.

Should such big names in the sport decide to withdraw from the Games, it will be a massive loss for the organisers. With Federer and Nadal, many younger players may follow suit and decide to withdraw from the competition. It will be something for the IOC to ponder upon.
