On Thursday, the third round of the 2022 WTA Canadian Open will feature World No. 46 Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan vs World No. 35 Alison Riske of the United States.
A day after defeating two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in a three-set match in the first round, Alison Riske needed three sets once more to defeat 16th seed Jelena Ostapenko. The victory let the American to make her first career trip to Toronto’s Round of 16. Riske has participated in the Canadian Open’s main draw seven times, however she has never advanced past the second round. She finally prevailed against the 2017 French Open champion on Wednesday in Canada’s Round of 32, 7-6 (7-2), 0-6, 7-5. It was the 20th victory of the year for the three-time tour-level winner. She participated in two finals this year, one each in Adelaide and Nottingham, however both times she came in second.
Fourth seed and opponent Paula Badosa had to withdraw from the match in the second round, allowing world No. 46 Yulia Putintseva to move on to the Round of 16. Early in the first set, Putintseva trailed by a break but recovered with a double break to lead by one set to love. The World No. 3 then won the opening game in the second set before retiring due to an injury. The 27-year-old, who reached the semifinals in Istanbul and Budapest this year, overcame a set deficit to defeat Katherine Sebov of Canada in the first round. Putintseva, who had only one match won in her previous five main draw outings at the Canadian Open, is currently one win away from her third participation in the last eight of the tournament this year.
Alison Riske and Yulia Putinseva are scheduled to face one another in the round of 16 of the 2022 Canadian Open on Thursday, August 11. The tournament is scheduled to run from August 8 till August 15.
The 2022 edition of the Canadian Open is set to begin from August 8 and go on until August 15. The men’s final is scheduled to be on August 15 and the women’s one is set to be held on August 14. There will be six rounds of play in the main draw excluding the qualifiers.
