Emma Raducanu and Victoria Azarenka will face off against one another in the 2022 WTA Cincinnati Open's second round on Wednesday.
The current US Open champion Emma Raducanu defeated Serena Williams, the 23-time Grand Slam winner and former world number one, 6-4, 6-0, in a match that delighted tennis fans around the world. Cincinnati hosted Williams’ final career match, but Raducanu is just getting started. Such a victory should do wonders for her self-assurance as she now sets her sights on defeating another top-ranked opponent. The 19-year-old British player, who is now ranked No. 13 in the world, has not had the best of seasons, but what matters is that she is acquiring crucial exposure and experience at the highest level. Her quarterfinal appearances at Stuttgart, Washington, and Madrid’s third round were among her season’s high points. The previous time Raducanu competed, Camila Giorgi defeated her in the first round in Toronto.
With a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 victory against Kaia Kanepi, Victoria Azarenka, the current World No. 22, got things off to a rough start in Cincinnati. When contrasted to Raducanu, 33-year-old Azarenka has a stronger pedigree as a two-time winner at this venue, with her most recent victory coming in 2020. She currently has a 16-9 record this year, which indicates that things have not gone well for her. The Belarusian has participated in a few events, but hasn’t quite been able to make it all the way through. Victoria lost to Jil Teichmann and Xiyu Wang in the third round of her past two competitions, the French Open and Citi Open, respectively. In reality, Azarenka has suffered a fair share of defeats at the hands of budding young stars this year, thus creating a foundation upon which Raducanu can thrive.
Emma Raducanu and Victoria Azarenka are scheduled to face one another in the second round of the 2022 Cincinnati Open on Wednesday, August 17. The tournament is scheduled to run from August 14 till August 21.
