The former world number broke Sakkari twice to clinch the first set, and when she broke her early again and later served for the match at 5-4. Â
After defeating an injured Ons Jabeur in the previous round, Qinwen proved that victory was no fluke by edging Bianca Andreescu in the third round. The Chinese player had some difficult moments during the three-hour match, but she eventually won 7-5, 5-7, 6-2 to advance to the last eight stage. The second set went to serve until 5-5, but it was Andreescu who broke in the 11th game and served it out to tie the match. The final set, however, was all one way traffic, with Qinwen racing out to a 3-1 lead and then breaking Andreescu twice more to reach the WTA1000 quarterfinals for the first time.
