On Sunday, Czech Republic's Karolina Pliskova and Brazil's Beatriz Haddad Maia will square off in the semifinals of the 2022 WTA Canadian Open.
Karolina Pliskova, ranked 14th in the world, recovered after dropping the opening set to defeat Qinwen Zheng of China in Friday’s quarterfinal match. The Czech is now just one victory away from reaching the Canadian Open final twice in a row. She defeated Zheng in 2 hours and 36 minutes in thrilling three set match 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Pliskova needed two hours and 28 minutes to defeat third-seeded Maria Sakkari in the Round of 16 (6-1, 6-7 (9-11), 6-3). However, she had won both of her first two games, defeating top competitors Barbora Krejcikova and Amanda Anisimova in the first and second rounds, respectively. Pliskova will compete in her first WTA 1000 tournament semifinal in 2022 and her second semifinal of the current campaign. The Czech, who has won 16 titles out of 32 matches, will try to advance to his or her eighth WTA 1000 final on Saturday.
A day after upsetting World No. 1 Iga Swiatek, Beatriz Haddad Maia pulled off another shock by defeating 2015 Champion and No. 12 seed Belinda Bencic. Haddad Maia, who last week rose to a career-high ranking of 24, defeated the Swiss player 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 and advanced to her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal. She did this by winning 75% of her points on her first serve, converting 4 of 6 break points, and saving 4 of 7. She was already the first Brazilian to make it to the quarterfinals of a WTA 1000 tournament, and now she has made it to the semifinals. Haddad Maia defeated Martina Trevisan in three sets to start her Rogers Cup campaign. She then defeated Leylah Fernandez, the local favourite, in straight sets before defeating Swiatek 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 in a three-hour match. Can Hadded Maia defeat a different seed this Saturday?
