Carlos Alcaraz Garfia is a professional tennis player from Spain. He was born on May 5, 2003. The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) has him ranked as high as world No. 29 in singles, which he first achieved in January 2022. He has one ATP Tour singles title and reached the quarterfinals of the 2021 US Open, his best Grand Slam singles performance. Alcaraz reached the No. 22 spot in the world as a junior and won two titles on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) junior circuit. Alcaraz has won three ITF Men's World Tennis Tour titles and four ATP Challenger Tour titles since turning professional in 2018.
After winning the 2021 Open de Oeiras III, he entered the top 100 for the first time in May 2021. He reached his first ATP Tour final two months later at the 2021 Croatia Open, where he defeated Richard Gasquet to win his first title, making him the youngest ATP Tour title winner since Kei Nishikori in 2008. After making his Grand Slam quarterfinal debut at the 2021 US Open, he broke into the top 50, and his breakthrough success qualified him for the 2021 Next Generation ATP Finals, the year-end tournament for the top-ranked singles players aged 21 and under, which he won. After receiving a wildcard for the singles main draw, Alcaraz made his ATP main-draw debut in February 2020 at the Rio Open, defeating fellow countryman Albert Ramos Violas. Alcaraz qualified for the main draw of the Australian Open at the age of 17, making him the men's singles' youngest competitor. He won his first Grand Slam match in straight sets against fellow qualifier Botic van de Zandschulp before losing in the second round to Mikael Ymer.
By defeating Nikoloz Basilashvili in the third round of the French Open, Alcaraz advanced to the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career. In July 2021, he reached his first ATP final, defeating top seed Albert Ramos-Violas at the Plava Laguna Croatia Open in Umag. He was defeated in the second round of Wimbledon by Daniil Medvedev. Alcaraz reached the round of 16 at the Winston-Salem Open, defeating qualifier Alexei Popyrin, and then defeated fourth seed Marton Fucsovics in the quarterfinals. He advanced to the semifinals by defeating Marcos Giron, but lost to Mikael Ymer.
Alcaraz reached the fourth round of the US Open after defeating world No. 3 Stefanos Tsitsipas in a fifth-set tiebreak, his biggest win of his career. At the age of 18, Alcaraz became the youngest man in a Grand Slam fourth round since Andrei Medvedev, then 17 years old, at the 1992 French Open, and the youngest man in the US Open fourth round since Michael Chang, then 17 years old, and Pete Sampras, then 18 years old, in 1989. He then defeated qualifier Peter Gojowczyk to advance to the quarterfinals. In the Open Era, Alcaraz became the youngest men's quarterfinalist in the US Open.
