Alex de Minaur is one of many young players who currently stands out on the ATP tour. The 22-year-old represents Australia on the international stage, but his lineage is quite noteworthy in itself.

His father Anibal is from Uruguay and his mother Esther is from Spain. His parents met in Sydney, when Esther came to work as a waitress in Anibal's restaurant. As a result, De Minaur was born in the city of Sydney but has dual Australian and Spanish citizenship.

He started playing tennis aged 3 in the Sydney Private Tennis Academy at the Parkside Tennis Courts in Kogarah Bay. His first coach was Kerry Dock before Cindy Dock took over the role of teaching him the ropes in the game.

He's also been mentored by Aussie great Lleyton Hewitt, although they've never worked together in an official capacity.

And after some success in the junior ranks - he won the 2016 Australian Open junior boys doubles title alongside Blake Ellis - he turned pro in 2015.

Grand Slam success has thus far eluded De Minaur. However, he's won 5 titles in men's singles competition and also won 1 doubles title.

Of his five singles titles wins, all of them have come in ATP 250 events. His first title win came at the Sydney International in 2019, where he beat Andreas Seppi in the final.

He then won the Atlanta Open with a victory over local favourite Taylor Fritz in the summit clash. And he added to that title haul in the same year by picking up the Zhuhai Championships in China.

2020 brought his sole doubles title win - he won the men's doubles title at the Cincinnati Masters alongside Pablo Carreno Busta. This remains his sole title win in a Masters event.

2021 then brought him two more singles titles wins - the Antalya Open in Turkey and the Eastbourne International in the United Kingdom.

His best Grand Slam showing up until now has been in the 2020 US Open. There, De Minaur made it to the quarterfinals - the first time he'd made the last eight in a Slam.

He almost made it to the quarters in the 2022 Australian Open as well; however, he lost in straight sets to Jannik Sinner in the fourth round.

His Slam record will doubtless improve over time. But, as things stand, the future looks bright for the player nicknamed 'The Speed Demon' due to his unreal speed and agility on the court.
