Jessica Pegula and Coco Vandeweghe are scheduled to face each other in the second round of the 2022 WTA San Diego Open on October 13.
Jessica Pegula added to her already stellar season with victories against Petra Kvitova and Emma Raducanu in the quarterfinals of Cincinnati and the US Open, as well as a semifinal appearance in Toronto. She’s most likely about to meet the singles and doubles qualifying requirements for the WTA Finals. She has often shown that she saves her best performance for the major competitions. Since the beginning of 2021, each of her 14 quarterfinal appearances has been at the WTA 500 level or higher. Since losing to Marie Bouzkova in the opening round at Indian Wells in this Californian city, the world No. 6 has not lost in the first round.
Coco Vandeweghe hadn’t competed in a match in over 40 days and hadn’t triumphed in one in close to 20. She overcame a break behind in the third set to defeat former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4, capitalising on her compatriot’s overall season-long slump. Injury setbacks have recently plagued the former world No. 9, with her most recent break occurring in February and March. In the previous four years, she has only made it to two WTA quarterfinals: Charleston in 2022 and Birmingham in 2021. Since the US Open in 2017, she hasn’t attended one on hard courts.
Jessica Pegula and Coco Vandeweghe are scheduled to face each other in the second round of the 2022 WTA San Diego Open on Thursday, October 13. The competition’s main draw is set to commence on October 10, 2022 and conclude on October 16, 2022.
The WTA San Diego Open 2022 will have five rounds of action excluding the qualifiers. These are the round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final. The competition’s main draw is set to commence on October 10, 2022 and conclude on October 16, 2022.
