Tommy Paul and Dominic Thiem are scheduled to face one another in the first round of the 2022 ATP Vienna Open on Tuesday, October 25.
Tommy Paul has had a season in which he has appeared in one semifinal and numerous quarterfinals. Despite being unable to reach a second career final after winning in Stockholm last year, the 25-year-old did reach his first ATP 1000 quarterfinal at the Canadian Masters. And, while he hasn’t been particularly effective at the tail end of tournaments, he has performed admirably in getting past the first few opponents. He was a semifinalist in Delray Beach, but he struggled on clay, a surface where he always struggles. On hard, however, he is 27-15 this season and will look to improve that record further before the season ends.
Dominic Thiem, the 2019 champion, will begin his Vienna Open campaign with renewed confidence, which he gained over the last two weeks in Gijon and Antwerp. The former world number three, who was pushed out of the top 300 due to injury and form issues last year, has been playing some excellent tennis recently and is on the verge of breaking back into the top 100. Thiem, who is currently ranked 113, reached the semifinals in Gijon and then advanced to the final four in Antwerp. His most significant victory came last week in the quarterfinals against World No. 11 Hubert Hurkacz. Thiem enters his home tournament with a 12-4 record over the last four tournaments as a result of the two promising performances.
Tommy Paul and Dominic Thiem are scheduled to face one another in the first round of the 2022 ATP Vienna Open on Tuesday, October 25. The competition’s main draw is set to commence on October 24, 2022 and conclude on October 30, 2022.
