On Wednesday, the second round of the 2022 US Open will feature world number 34 Tommy Paul versus Sebastian Korda, who is rated 53.
When Tommy Paul faced Bernabe Zapata Miralles in the first round, he was a 3/25 favourite and was predicted to cruise to the next round. Instead, he spent three hours and thirteen minutes on the court and needed five sets to defeat his opponent in a contest that was evenly matched up to the very end. Paul eventually overcame a 2-1 set disadvantage to win 4-6, 6-3, 2-6, 6-0, and 7-5. The difference between the two players was two serves of breaks. A single break by Zapata Miralles in the first set and one by Paul in the second brought the score to a tie. The American then broke his adversary to go up 2-0, but what transpired next was an odd series of events. Paul responded with three of his own breaks to tie the match at two sets apiece after Zapata Miralles broke his opponent three times in a row to take the third set. In the decisive set, the score remained tied at 4-4 before Paul had two chances to serve it out, at 5-4 and 6-5. Much to the relief of his camp, he took the second one.
After a few strong showings at the Cincinnati Masters and Washington Open, Sebastian Korda started his US Open campaign with a four-set victory over Facundo Bagnis. The game lasted three hours and seventeen minutes, and if Bagnis hadn’t been so prolific, the outcome would have been different. Bagnis, who had already won the first set, led 2-0 after two breaks of serve, but Korda broke back both times. And from that point on, continuing making progress to win the match 5-7, 7-6 (3), 7-5, 6-1, and advance to the next round. Interesting enough, this was Korda’s first victory at the US Open, and he now wants to celebrate by winning two straight matches.
Tommy Paul and Sebastian Korda are scheduled to face each other on Wednesday, August 31 in the second round of the 2022 US Open. The fourth and final Grand Slam of the season began on August 29 and will go on until September 11.
