Tommy Paul and Daniel Evans are scheduled to face one another in the quarterfinals of the 2022 Canadian Open on Saturday, August 13.
After shocking second seed Carlos Alcaraz in the second round on Wednesday, World No. 34 Tommy Paul advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Marin Cilic in straight sets in the third round on Thursday. Following a three-hour and 21-minute second-round match against World No. 4 Alcaraz on Wednesday, Paul had a simple victory. Paul saved a match point in the second set tiebreak to defeat the second seed 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (9-7) 6-3. Paul improved to 28-19 on the season with the victory. On Saturday, he will compete in the season’s eighth quarterfinal.
Daniel Evans advanced to the year’s third quarterfinal after defeating Taylor Fritz in a three-set match on Thursday. Evans defeated the World No. 13 for the second time in two weeks. Last week in Washington, Evans had come back from a set down and was leading the third set 4-1 when an exhausted Fritz retired. The match did not end abruptly this time, as Evans defeated the American 7-6 (7-5), 1-6, 7-5. Evans’ third tour-level quarterfinal appearance this year, and his second in two weeks following his run to the last eight in Washington. This year, his best performance on the tour was a semifinal finish in Sydney.
