Paolini needed nearly two hours to recover from a set deficit and defeat Marta Kostyuk in the first round. Paolini won 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 58 minutes in a match that featured a whopping 13 serve breaks. Stalling Kostyuk’s 10 aces were offset by Paolini’s more consistent play, as she won 56% of her first serves and 59% of her second serves, compared to 75% and 23% for her opponent. Four consecutive serve breaks brought them to 3-3 in the third set before Paolini broke Kostyuk in the seventh game for a decisive turn of events. She held on to 15 in the two service games that followed to secure the victory.
Dayana Yastremska had last walked off the court with a victory smile on her face in June, in Birmingham. Yastremska was the second favorite going into her match against Jelena Ostapenko, and she won in three sets. Little did she know that Yastremska would not win another match in the eight that followed. Yastremska hadn’t won a set in all of this, let alone a match. That is why, despite being a 4/5 favorite to win her opener, Yastremska may not have been confident she could pull it off. Tamara Korpatsch, her opponent, may have raised some doubts in her mind by leveling the match in the second set, but in the end, a close third set favored Yastremska.
