On Friday, in the quarterfinal round of the WTA Slovenia open Jasmine Paolini of Italy will face Katerina Siniakova of Czech.
Jasmine Paolini blew a 5-2 lead in the first set and a 4-1 lead in the final, and she later came within two points of losing in the second round. The defending champion finally roared to a 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 triumph despite failing to serve out local favourite Kaja Juvan once. The Italian won her first WTA championship last year by outlasting the trio of Sorana Cirstea, Yulia Putintseva, and Alison Riske. After playing in just three WTA quarterfinals all season and advancing to the semifinals on clay in Palermo and Warsaw, she has now returned to Slovenia.
After winning at Flushing Meadows, Katerina Siniakova was allowed an extra day to adjust to the weather in Portoroz. She has used it well, defeating fourth-seeded Martina Trevisan of Roland-Garros and British qualifier Jodie Burrage in straight sets. After finishing 18-0 in major tournaments this season and completing her career Grand Slam, the 26-year-old has reclaimed her position as the top doubles player. While trying to get to her first WTA semifinal since the 2021 Bad Homburg, her singles career has entirely stagnated (final).
Jasmine Paolini and Katerina Siniakova are scheduled to face each other in the quarterfinal of the 2022 WTA Slovenia Open on Friday, September 16. The tournament is scheduled to begin on September 12 and end on September 18.
