On thursday, in the round of 16 of the WTA Slovenia open Kaja Juvan of Slovenia will face Jasmine Paolini of Italy.
Kaja Juvan won her first match in 2.5 months, breaking a four-match losing streak. She deserves extra praise for pulling it off against the constantly dangerous floater Alize Cornet. After falling behind 2-5 in the first set, she overcame several obstacles to defeat the sixth seed 7-6, 6-3. The 21-year-brief old’s tour-level career thus far had only a few standout moments. She began her career with her first WTA quarterfinal and semifinal appearances in Portoroz last year, defeating Petra Martic and Tamara Zidansek along the way. This year, she advanced to the Strasbourg final and Wimbledon third round.
Following a 1-3 performance in North America, Jasmine Paolini arrived in Portoroz. It includes losing to Iga Swiatek in the US Open final. In Portoroz, the defending champion faced 219th-ranked Tara Wurth and rallied to win 7-5, 6-1 after falling behind 1-3 in the first set. The Italian player had never advanced to a WTA semifinal in her career and had not been in a quarterfinal on the circuit in precisely two years when she competed in Portoroz the previous year. She overcame all of those mental obstacles and beat Yulia Putintseva and Sorana Cirstea in three sets to win her first career title.
Kaja Juvan and Jasmine Paolini are scheduled to face each other in the round of 16 of the 2022 WTA Slovenia Open on Thursday, September 15. The tournament is scheduled to begin on September 12 and end on September 18.
