Jelena Ostapenko and Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva will face each other in the quarterfinal round of the 2022 Korea Open on Friday.
Jelena Ostapenko, who won this event in 2017, is a former champion. She defeated Beatriz Haddad Maia at the time, and now both of them are back and performing admirably at this event. However, the Latvian had a difficult time in this one. She came close to losing the match against Gasanova, but she was able to survive and move on. The reward is a quarterfinal match against a lucky loser, but it will be anything but easy. She has a very aggressive style of play. She has over 20 winners and an equal or double the number of errors in each of her matches. It’s just a byproduct of her tennis style, and it’s extremely difficult to counter when it’s working well.
Lucky Loser Victoria Jimenez Kasintsea had no idea she’d be playing in the quarterfinals of an event she only entered by chance. She actually lost to Sun in the qualifiers, but she got lucky. She certainly made good use of it, winning two matches in a row. Against two fairly solid players, no sets were dropped. Although none of her opponents were world beaters, she needed to win to boost her confidence and self-belief. Ostapenko is a good opponent for her because she won’t have to think too hard. If Ostapenko can be patient and return enough balls, she may be able to beat herself and advance to the semi-finals. She is only 17 years old and comes from Andorra, a country with little tennis history.
Jelena Ostapenko and Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva are scheduled to face each other in the quarterfinal round of the 2022 Korea Open on Friday, September 23. The tournament is scheduled to begin on September 19 and end on September 25.
