On Wednesday, Reilly Opelka, rated 17th in the world, will play Denis Kudla, an 82nd-ranked American, in the second round of the 2022 ATP Citi Open.
Despite his recent problems at the highest level, Reilly Opelka has risen to his career-best position of 17th in the world. The American entered the competition after losing five of his previous six matches, including a match at Wimbledon where he lost in the second round. That was also his final competitive encounter, and after receiving a first-round bye, he is back to begin his US Open Series campaign. Opelka’s record on hard courts is 71-57, which indicates that playing on these surfaces is his strong strength, but it’s also oddly positioned at 70-69 on outdoor hard courts. It might not be an easy task to beat Kudla, who has already participated in a few matches on this surface this season, but the rested Opelka should still be a strong favourite.
Kudla defeated Michael Mmoh in his opening match in what ended up being a three-setter to snap a three-match losing streak and advance to round two. The 82nd-ranked Denis Kudla required two hours and seventeen minutes to win his opening match against Mmoh 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 in order to face Opelka. This came after he lost to Mackenzie McDonald in the opening round of his Atlanta debut the previous week. Kudla had earlier this year triumphed in a Challenger match on hard courts in Phoneix before advancing through the qualifiers to reach Miami’s third round. The Americans have already lost one battle to Kudla. The question is if he can defeat a much stronger opponent in a second one.
Reilly Opelka and Denis Kudla will face each other in the second round of the 2022 Citi open on Wednesday, August 3. The ATP 500 competition is scheduled to start from August 1 and end on August 7 this year.
