In modern Tennis, the head-to-head encounters between Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev have captivated fans all over the world. Novak Djokovic is the world number one with 20 Grand Slams, the same number as Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Daniil Medvedev, on the other hand, is the world number two having lost in two Grand Slam finals. But, in the year 2021, Daniil Medvedev and Novak Djokovic created plenty of history in the sport.

Djokovic became the first individual in the history of the Open Era to win all four Grand Slams two times or more. When Djokovic won the French Open, he cemented his legacy as one of the greatest players. As he won Wimbledon for the sixth time, Djokovic drew level with Federer and Nadal for most Grand Slam wins. Djokovic was now gunning for history as he tried to become the first male player to achieve the Golden Calendar Grand Slam.

The Serb wanted to win the Tokyo Olympics gold as well as the US Open. Had he achieved that, he would have become the first male player and second since Steffi Graf to achieve the Golden Grand Slam. But, Djokovic lost the chance to win any medal in Tokyo. However, he still wanted to become the first man since Rod Laver to win all four Grand Slam titles in the same year.
