Yoshihito Nishioka and Denis Shapovalov will take on each other in the final of the 2022 ATP Korea Open on Sunday, October 2.
Denis Shapovalov defeated Jenson Brooksby in straight sets in the semifinal of the ATP Seoul tournament, showing flashes of his world-class talent but also displaying some inconsistency. Despite dominating the American teenager for the bulk of the match, he lost his serve at 5-4 in the opening set and losing nine games. Whatever the case, the Canadian has had one of his best weeks in recent memory. He has done a good job of controlling the uneven aspect of his game and has managed to get to the final without dropping a set. Earlier in the season, he defeated Jaume Munar Clar and the strong Radu Albot in straight sets.
Yoshihito Nishioka has played on the court for a lot longer than his opponent Denis Shapovalov this week because he had to play four matches (without an R1 bye) and because the top-seeded Casper Ruud in the quarterfinal and the first-time semifinalist Aleksandar Kovacevic both outlasted him in his last two matches. The Japanese No. 1 has a great record in East Asia and has advanced to the final in the first East Asian event since 2019. Regular tournaments in this region should help him move up the rankings. World No. 56 is 2-0 in South Korea and has a perfect record in Asian finals at all levels, including the Asian Games that were hosted there in 2014. When he entered as a qualifier and beat Denis Shapovalov his route to winning the East Asian tournament in Shenzhen four years prior, he won his only other ATP title.
Yoshihito Nishioka and Denis Shapovalov are scheduled to face each other in the final of the 2022 ATP Korea Open on Sunday, October 2. The tournament is scheduled to begin on September 24 and end on October 2.
