Nicolas Jarry vs Hugo Dellien will take place in the first round of the 2023 French Open on May 30.
Nicolas Jarry’s career resurgence saw him reclaim his position in the top 50 rankings. This achievement was made possible by his outstanding performances during the South American clay swing earlier this year. He won his home tournament in Santiago and showed his potential by defeating top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz in the ATP Rio de Janeiro semifinals. His success, however, did not last during the early stages of the European clay swing. He was unable to replicate his previous level of achievement during a three-match losing streak between ATP Barcelona and the Rome Masters.
Hugo Dellien had a strong start to the 2023 season on his preferred clay surface, winning 15 matches in the first three months of the season. However, he struggled to replicate that success over the next three months, winning only one more game. Fitness issues hampered his performance, causing him to miss nearly a month of action. Furthermore, Dellien has faced significant challenges in recent matches, as he has failed to win a set in his last four losses. The Bolivian did reasonably well in the first round of the clay slam. He defeated the underdog Prajnesh Gunneswaran in his tournament debut in 2019.

Nicolas Jarry has a 2-1 lead. The Chilean’s achievements in Geneva last week may have little bearing on his performance in Paris, as the conditions and dynamics of the two tournaments can differ significantly, and as a result, his game may be less effective in Paris than it was in Geneva. Hugo Dellien could pose a formidable challenge to Nicolas Jarry if he has improved his fitness and brings his A-game on Tuesday.
