Magda Linette and Rebecca Peterson will take on each other in the quarter-final of the 2023 ATP Merida Open on February 25.
In the second round, Magda Linette was staring at the possibility of a deciding set, but her opponent suffered a tragic accident. After rolling her right ankle, Panna Udvardy was forced to retire, and the Pole won 6-0, 2-5, ret., to advance to the quarterfinals. Her season-high 10th victory is not how she would have preferred it to be. For the first time in her career, she is competing in a WTA tournament as the top seed, and she celebrated the milestone with a two hours and 41 minute match against Camila Osorio. She hasn’t played since her sensational Australian Open performance, in which she upset three players who are currently or have previously ranked in the top five to advance to her first major semifinal.
Since the beginning of July, she has won 31 hard-court matches at all levels, and her second-place finishes at the W100 Grodzisk Mazowiecki, WTA 250 Chennai, and 125K Tampico in Mexico foreshadowed her run in Melbourne. The 31-year-poor old’s 12-16 career record in quarterfinals and 2-5 recent record won’t bother her.
Rebecca Peterson makes her first appearance in the WTA quarterfinals since the conclusion of 2021. She put on a scorching look. Alycia Parks, who recently won in Lyon, defeated the fifth seed 6-4, 6-2 to exact revenge for her loss in the 125K Andorra final. Despite only having four victories, it was enough considering her opponent’s 33 errors. The former world No. 43 arrived in Merida nearly a hundred spots lower than her previous highest ranking. She was winless in matches in January, but she did begin February with a W60 Orlando championship. She battled her way past Carol Zhao in a three-hour match and defeated Nadia Podoroska in straights to qualify for Friday.
