The 2023 WTA Merida Open's top seed Magda Linette will take on Panna Udvardy on Friday in the second round.

Hungary’s Panna Udvardy defeated Germany’s Jule Niemeier by scores of 7-6(1), 7-6 to earn her first WTA victory of the year (5). The 91st-ranked player had a tight situation but narrowly prevailed. The 24-year-old had previously participated in a few ITF and WTA competitions, but she had not had much luck there. She competed most recently in ITF Orlando, where she was defeated by Arianne Hartono in round two. She was defeated by Osorio in the opening round of the Australian Open, and Anna Blinkova in the qualifiers for the Tasmanian Open. Nonetheless, she and Viktorija Golubic did make it to the doubles final there. Udvardy finished the previous campaign 42-33, with 28 victories and 19 losses coming on clay. Her three doubles and two singles finals on the Challenger circuit in 2022 are proof positive that she has always been a clay-court specialist. She may have had trouble performing thus far for that reason, and Linette is likely to win.
Magda Linette, who is relishing her new position as the World No. 21—a career-high achievement—started her Merida campaign out shakily with a three-set battle against Camila Osorio. After two hours and forty-two minutes, Linette prevailed 6-7(2), 7-5, 6-2. Her ability to preserve two match points in two straight games during the second set is outstanding. After falling behind 3-5, she continued to mount an incredible comeback, which resulted in her complete dominance of the third set. The Polish player, 31, who was playing in her first tournament since the Australian Open, was obviously rusty. Having said that, she has undoubtedly improved since reaching the Slam semifinals. By defeating players like Anett Kontaveit, Ekaterina Alexandrova, Caroline Garcia, Karolina Pliskova, and Mayar Sherif in Melbourne, she wrote her own chapter in history. She had previously competed in the United Cup, making it to the second round and semifinals, respectively.
