Wednesday's opening round of the 2023 WTA Merida Open will feature Camila Osorio, who is ranked 61st in the world, taking on world number 21 Magda Linette.
Linette has been referred to as a late bloomer in several media outlets, and it appears to be a reasonable assessment given the current state of tennis, where players like American Cori Gauff and fellow Pole Iga Swiatek have both made an impression while still teenagers and cracked the top five. Linette, on the other hand, recently turned 31 and is coming off her best Grand Slam performance to date, as she advanced to the Australian Open semifinal by defeating four of the best players on the tour. Anett Kontaveit, Ekaterina Alexandrova, Caroline Garcia, and Karolina Pliskova were all defeated by the Polish number two, who only dropped one set in the process. She was defeated by Aryna Sabalenka, who would go on to win the title. After a gap of almost 23 days, Linette is back playing competitive tennis with an 8-3 win-loss record and a career-high world ranking of 21. Although she has a challenging opponent in the initial round, a strong performance in this competition could help her move up into the top 20 of the world rankings.
Osorio had the unfortunate encounter with Iga Swiatek early in the season’s first major despite not participating in any of the Australian Open warm-up competitions this year. The 21-year-old Colombian was decisively defeated in that second-round match. But, Camila Osorio did demonstrate why she is regarded as one of the players to watch out during her homecoming tournament, which was held in Lyon earlier this month. She started out by defeating Alize Cornet in three sets, then beat Linda Noskova and Jule Niemeier in straight sets to advance to the semifinals. Osorio will be happy with her performance even if Caroline Garcia won their match in the last four. She now faces the top seed in this tournament, which could be a struggle, but she won’t be short in confidence.

One score ahead is Camila Osorio. When she defeated Magda Linette, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, on the green clay courts of Charleston in April 2021, she was ranked 135th. Her first top 100 victory occurred away from her own country. The Colombian, who scored five points in the final last year in Monterrey, is anticipated to continue to pose a serious danger.
Magda Linette and Camila Osorio will take on each other in the first round of the 2023 ATP Merida Open on February 22.
