Since finishing in the last eight of the 125K Tampico race in Mexico in October, Katerina Siniakova hasn’t advanced past the quarterfinals at any level. She defeated Ysaline Bonaventure 6-0, 7-5, holding off five of six breakpoints while serving three aces in a row in the decisive game. It was an enjoyable way for her to avenge her loss in St. Petersburg in 2019. She travelled to Merida in search of the season’s first main draw victory, despite winning the fourth straight major doubles championship in Melbourne. The Czech, who was defeated by Lesia Tsurenko in the opening round, has only advanced to her fifth quarterfinal overall since the start of the previous year (2-2).

The 26-year-old, who is ranked No. 1 in the world in doubles, has recently had difficulty in the singles game. She was unable to advance past the quarterfinals until late July of last year, but she still managed to win a W100 tournament in Poland and her first WTA title in five years at Portoroz. The latter was her first performance in a hard-court WTA semifinal or higher in the previous three years.

Compared to the Czech, Elisabetta Cocciaretto played her second round one day earlier. She successfully advanced to her second quarterfinal of the year, second in Mexico, and fifth quarterfinal overall. She outplayed Wang Xinyu for 73 minutes, winning 20 more points than she lost, and won 6-4, 6-2. Her second serve had a higher winning percentage than her first serve. Just four months ago, she competed in this nation, placing in the second round of the Guadalajara WTA 1000 before winning her biggest title at the 125K Tampico tournament by defeating four players ranked in the top 100. She carried the momentum to Hobart, where she defeated Bernarda Pera and Sofia Kenin in three sets to win her first WTA championship (l. Lauren Davis).
