Elina Avanesyan, a qualifier and the 170th-ranked player in the world, presented Wang Xinyu with a more difficult challenge than she could have anticipated. Before she won the match against the Russian, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3, she was down a set and a break. She has been touring around Mexico for the past two weeks since last week’s quarterfinal at W60 Irapuato. After reaching three ITF finals in the latter weeks of 2022, the young Chinese player has put up some excellent performances on the tour this year. She reached her first quarterfinal in over a year after defeating Alison Van Uytvanck in Hobart (despite playing as a fortunate loser). She then proceeded to Hua Hin for her second semifinal of her career.
Elisabetta Cocciaretto defeated Viktorija Golubic with a perfect score of 6-0, 6-3 after spending a few amazing weeks in Australia. The Italian defeated competitors like Sofia Kenin and Alize Cornet along the way to reaching her first WTA final in Hobart last month, but two of her three event runs ended in the first round. It is not shocking that she chose to take part in this event. While residing in Mexico, she won her largest professional championship at the 125K Tampico tournament in October. She also made the first of her two WTA semifinal appearances there (2021 Guadalajara). She had to persevere through arduous three-set battles with Marie Bouzkova, Camila Osorio, and Magda Linette to get there.

Elisabetta Cocciaretto returned to the court after her impressive 0-0 streak of a few weeks. Last year, Wang Xinyu had two attempts to go to the quarterfinals of the Guadalajara and Monterrey WTA 250s, but she was eliminated by Anna Kalinskaya and Beatriz Haddad Maia. Elisabetta Cocciaretto will be ready for the challenge because she has won 13 of her last 19 games.
